Abstract
About 36% of the Portuguese mainland is forested, with more than 800 thousand hectares occupied with eucalypt, mostly Eucalyptus globulus. Despite the lack of management that characterizes about 2/3 of this area, the national eucalypt forest is responsible for supplying raw material for a competitive sector with high added value. The desirable improvement in active land management and the productivity of the eucalypt stands requires, as a starting point, scientific knowledge to support forestry operations that maximize the use of the potential of the areas and ensure the sustainability of the ecosystem services.
The e-globulus platform (www.e-globulus.pt), available since August 2019, is a pioneering tool in the dissemination of knowledge in forestry and eucalypt, and in the customized forestry technical indication in accordance with the growth stage of the stand and the local edaphoclimatic conditions (supported in Geographic Information System) in compliance with the best management practices. It is free, open-access and has a wide spectrum of scope, having as its target audience: individual forestry producers, forest producer organizations, certification groups and other entities in the forestry sector; academia and the general public. This platform boosts the reduction of the area of national unmanaged eucalypt forest, with potential economic, social and environmental gains and a reduction in the structural deficit in the supply of eucalypt wood in Portugal, reducing the country's foreign exchange loss and adding value to the forestry chain. The platform has mobilizing and collaborative potential, as it facilitates communication between the producer and the organization of forestry producers or other entities, which may also contribute to the acquisition of scale, a restriction existing mainly in the North of Portugal where the smallholding prevails.
